GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION: New York City (United States of America USA)
New York City has served as the main entry port for immigrants and trading route to America throughout its history. The first European settlement began in 1609. New York city was incorporated as ” New Amsterdam” in 1953 by the Dutch but was later named as New York after it was conquered by the British in 1664. The city was made the first national capital in 1785 under the Unites States constitution and remained so till 1790 when the honor went to Philadelphia. By 1835 the city surpassed Philadelphia as the largest US city due to immigration, visionary city planning and the opening of the Erie canal which connected the agricultural Midwest to Canada. The immigration to the city increased considerably after the civil war and the dedication of the Statue of Liberty by France in 1886. The modern New York city was formed in 1898 due to the consolidation of Brooklyn, Manhattan, Bronx and outlying areas. The city became a trading and commerce center by early 20th century with the building of some of the world’s tallest skyscrapers, bridges, parks and a rapid mass transit/subway systems. The city attracted major population from the south to migrate for economic opportunities. The stock market crash of 1929 started the great depression. By the end the of 1930′ the 2nd world war created jobs which ended the depression. The city emerged as the economic capital of the world after the 2nd world war ended in 1945, serving as a financial, communication, law and education service center. The united nations was formed after the 2nd world war and was headquartered in New York. With the re-emergence of wall street in 1980’s the city became the financial capital of the world, which benefited from a boom in finance, media, internet and real estate in the 1990’s. The city was the site for the worst terrorist attack on USA at world trade center in Sept 11 2001. The city has recovered with the one world trade center currently being built at the location.
New York City ( also commonly referred to as the Big Apple, the city that never sleeps) with a population of 8.4 Million is a true melting pot of people from diverse ethnics groups, with the largest representation of Italian, African American, Jews & Irish. New York is the center for global business and trade and is the largest financial center in the world. The city is also a center for insurance, real estate, media and arts in USA. Financial services accounts for 35% of the city’s employment income. Real estate in the city was worth $802.4 billion in 2006. The media( television & film) industry in the city is the second largest after Hollywood. Other significant growth industries in the city are biotechnology, software development, gaming, bio medical research, technology and education. The city houses such notable universities as Columbia, NYU, City university of New York, Barnard college and pace university. The city has major biological research institutions, namely Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Weill Cornell Medical College, Rockefeller University, SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. New York city has the world’s largest rapid transit system, with a total of 468 stations currently in operation . George Washington bridge is the busiest motor vehicle bridge in the world. New York city is the top air passenger gateway to USA with the city’s airspace being the busiest in the nation. New York city has an extensive network of expressways and parkways to connect it to the adjacent states and suburbs. The global financial crisis of 2007-2010 which was caused due to the mortgage crisis( Undervalued /Risky securities were rated AA+ or AAA and sold to investors ) and risky investments led to the closure of major security firms namely Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers and the conversion of other firms into banks. It also lead to mass layoffs and job cuts in new York city.
The city’s economy is beginning to show signs of recovery with the hiring starting to pickup in the financial, new media, healthcare & technology sectors. The city’s unemployment rate held steady at 8.9 percent in Feb. 2011 which was well below the 10.3 percent in 2009. The slump in the housing market is creating opportunity for investment into the new York city real estate market. With the push towards green technology and incentives provided by the current US administration, an investment in green manufacturing and technology will create jobs and growth within the city. With the financial services sector providing 35 % of income for New York city at present, other sectors like fashion, digital media, bio technology, IT and green sectors will play an increasing role in the development of the city in the future. Investments to improve the current infrastructure including bridges, overpasses, roads and transportation would be critical to the growth of the city. With the expanding global economy the key to the New York city’s growth would be to collaborate with growing economies like China and India to setup think tanks and institutions to be able to attract investment, knowledge and workers. This would mean a more mature immigration policy at the center which allows movement of skilled labor in a increasing knowledge based economy of the future.
